To learn more about diamond clarity, know the terms that refer to it, such as:
Diamond Inclusions
These are the imperfections or flaws inside a diamond. These can include tiny spots of white, black, and other colours. Diamond inclusions can also include cracks that can cause the stones to split. The inclusions can also refer to coloured and uncoloured crystals.
Diamond Blemishes
These are the flaws on the diamond’s external surface. Most of these external flaws are the result of the diamond cutting and polishing process.
Diamond Grades
Gemology institutes grade diamond clarity and tag diamonds as:
Loupe Clean (LC)
This means the diamond has no internal or external flaws.
Very, Very Small Inclusions (VVS1 and VVS2)
This means the diamond has minute inclusions that are difficult for even experienced graders to detect.
Very Small Inclusions (VS1 and VS2)
This means the diamond has minute inclusions not easily seen by experienced graders.
Small Inclusions (SI1 and SI2)
This means the diamond has inclusions that are noticeable to experienced graders.
Inclusions (P1 or I1, P2 or I2, and P2 or I2)
This refers to obvious inclusions that can affect the transparency and brilliance of the diamond.
The detailed explanations for the diamond clarity categories suggest that even experienced jewellers often can’t detect flaws without magnification. Most flaws are also tiny imperfections that don’t even affect the diamond’s brilliance. As such, there’s often no need to be concerned too much about diamond clarity when you’ve chosen a stone below the top of the grade scale.
