Don't Ruin Your Jewellery
There are actually several ways for you to find out if your precious stone is real or not. The easiest and most common one is scratching it against glass or sandpaper. If it’s a real diamond, the damage will be on the other material. If it’s not, you’ll end scratching the stone. You may have found out the truth but think about it: you still ruined a piece of jewellery – and one that looks like a diamond at that. If you want to avoid this, don’t do anything drastic and try alternative tests.
Find Out For Yourself
Before doing other tests, take your concentration out of the stone and focus instead on the metal. A real diamond won’t be set in just any type of metal. It will either be gold or platinum and you can prove this by checking the unit of purity stamped inside. The facets of the stone can also be indicative of its authenticity. But unless you’re as good as one of those jewellers in Melbourne, you won’t be able to tell for sure.
Light tests are also helpful in finding out whether or not you have a real diamond in your hands. If you shine a light on your precious stone and it reflects a bright halo around the brim, then it is most likely authentic. Under the UV light, diamonds will exhibit blue fluorescence. Not all stones, however, will have this feature as better quality diamonds can remain colourless under a black light.
Looking at the reflection of the stone can also help you check its authenticity. While fake stones will show you a rainbow, real diamonds will just give you various shades of gray. Speaking of fake stones, there are actually precious ones that can pass as diamonds. Several tests will show you their similarities but also give you insights at what makes them almost the same.
Know About Similar Stones
There are three stones that can be easily mistaken as diamonds. The first is cubic zirconia and it looks almost the same as diamonds. The difference is that it is heavier. Another stone that looks exactly like diamonds is Moissanite. There are actually a lot of engagement rings in Melbourne that are made of this stone. What makes it different though is its fluorescence under UV light. Instead of blue, it will often exhibit gray, yellow, or green.
Quartz is another dead ringer for diamond. But you can tell it apart easily because it sparkles less. It is also not as visible as diamonds when you drop them on a glass of water. There are actually other stones that look like diamonds but cannot be easily identified as such. If this is a case, you need to consult a professional – whether you like it or not.
