Setting Style and Techniques
The setting is everything about the ring except for the stone, and is where jewellers place the diamond or any gemstone. Apart from its size, couples can customise and choose from the following styles:
- Solitaire – This setting has a single diamond and doesn’t have accent stones surrounding it.
- Side Stones – These complement the centre stone by providing more shine to the ring.
- Three-stone – This symbolises the past, present, and future of a couple’s relationship.
- Matching Set – This style offers a matching design with wedding bands, which work like a puzzle piece.
Diamond Cuts and Shapes
Diamonds are natural crystals, so these don’t always have the perfect appearance when mined. This is why skilled cutters form them into different shapes to provide the most brilliance and least number of flaws.
- Cushion Cut – This is the combination of a modern oval cut and an Old Mine Cut, which was popular in late 19th century for its deep cut and big facets.
- Emerald Cut – Its broad, flat, and rectangular corners are similar to the steps of a staircase. It also has a square version called an Asscher cut.
- Heart-Shaped – The symbol of love, it was originally a pear-shaped diamond with a cleft on top. Check the curve and cleft to know if these have equal proportions.
- Round – This is the standard shape of diamonds. Featuring a 58-facet cut, it’s divided into three parts: crown, girdle, and pavilion.
- Princess Cut – This gives the same brilliance of a typical round diamond, but is in square or rectangular form.
